Three-time Auckland champion Ferrer set for title defense The 2013 season continues as the ATP World Tour makes a stop in Auckland, New Zealand for this week’s Heineken Open. Defending champion David Ferrer is set to enter the 28-player draw as the top seed.

World No. 5 David Ferrer returns to hard-court action following a semifinal finish at the Qatar Exxonmobile Open. The two-time defending Heineken Open champion advanced to the final four before falling to Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko in straight sets. The Spaniard will be making his ninth appearance in Auckland, where he captured the first of his three tournament titles in 2007 (def. Robredo).

The 30-year-old veteran tops a competitive top half of the draw that includes: (3) Tommy Haas, (6) Jurgen Melzer and (8) Thomaz Bellucci. Additional entrants in the section are Lukas Lacko, Paolo Lorenzi, David Goffin, Robin Haase and wildcard Gael Monfils.

After receiving a first-round bye, Ferrer will open his bid against either Yen-Hsun Lu or Benoit Paire.

Leading the bottom half of the draw is Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber, who captured the championship title in 2008. The 29-year-old has been placed alongside fellow seeds (4) Sam Querrey, (5) Jerzy Janowicz and (7) Martin Klizan.

Completing the list of players is Brian Baker, wildcards Daniel King-Turner and Olivier Rochus, Albert Ramos, Santiago Giraldo, Go Soeda and Xavier Malisse.

Following an opening-round bye, Kohlschreiber is set to play either Grega Zemlja or Alejandro Falla.
