  • Injured Tsonga pulls from Sydney

    1/4/13 6:39 PM | Johan Lindahl
Injured Tsonga pulls from Sydney Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga faces a fitness battle to be ready for the start of the Australian Open on January 14 after withdrawing injured from the Sydney International.

The world No. 8 was forced out of his final tune-up prior to the first major of the season after suffering a hamstring problem in Hopman Cup play in Perth.

The charismatic Frenchman first felt problems during a winning singles group match with South African Kevin Anderson. Tsonga then had to quit midway through the mixed doubles tie at the hybrid teams tournament.

The Sydney absence means Tsonga will head to the Open with three matches under his belt in Perth.

"Unfortunately Jo-Wilfried Tsonga sustained an injury in Perth and has been forced to pull out with a left hamstring injury," read a Sydney tournament statement. "We wish him a speedy recovery and all the best for a successful Australian Open. We look forward to welcoming him back to Sydney in 2014."
