  • Murray advice - stay in the shell

    1/2/13 8:46 PM | Johan Lindahl
Murray advice - stay in the shell Andy Murray credits a "turtle shell" mentality with helping him to focus on his tennis while conveniently shutting out distractions.

And the Scot has offered some perhaps unsolicited advice to fellow US Open winner Samantha Stosur after the Aussie was bundled out in her opening match of the season in Brisbane, where Murray is defending the trophy.

Murray delineated his own philosophy about shutting out the world with success after becoming the first British player since Fred Perry in 1936 to win a Grand Slam.

"My advice would be to forget about everyone else and be extremely selfish for the next three weeks and I am sure she has the game to go well," Murray said. "You need to try to get into a little bubble.

"It can be difficult to manage your energy and your emotions, to concentrate on your practice and not think about anything else. I don't read the papers or watch TV. I don't see it is beneficial in any way.

"Sometimes if you read bad things it can be motivation but if you read good things I don't think it helps. If you are reading about people saying 'I think you can win the event or this is the year', it just does not help."

Murray said that he is relaxed going into the pre-Australian open campaign despite losing his first match of the season last week in an exhibition against Janko Tipsarevic in Abu Dhabi.

"I probably feel a little bit more relaxed than I normally do a few weeks out from a Slam," he said, crediting his US open title with easing the load. "But once I get on court I am sure everything will stay the same."
