Popular Indian Somdev Devvarman kicked off his 2013 season with a win over Jan Hajek. No. 7 seed Yen-Hsun Lu lost his opening match to Matthias Bachinger.
Somdev Devvarman (WC) def. Jan Hajek 6-3, 6-3
Somdev Devvarman's last match win on the ATP tour was back in October of 2011. The Indian went 0 for 3 in all of 2012. His ranking has dropped to 664th in the world so he required a wildcard to get into Chennai.
Hajek, who is ranked No. 106 in the world, was favored to win but he was unable to take advantage of his break-point chances and he allowed Devvarman too many looks on his own serve.
Devvarman will take on top seed Tomas Berdych in the second round.
Matthias Bachinger def. Yen-Hsun Lu 6-4, 3-6, 6-4
This was a sloppy match for both players. No. 7 seed Yen-Hsun Lu had a full dozen chances to break Matthias Bachinger's serve. The German was able to stave off 10 of them to hold Lu to a pair of breaks.
Both of Lu's service breaks came in the middle set, but Bachinger was able to secure a single break in the first and third sets for the upset win.
Bachinger will battle Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut in his next match.
