Ferrer overcomes Brown, Monfils cruises in Doha David Ferrer gets past Dustin Brown in three sets on Tuesday in Doha. Ferrer is joined in the second round by Gael Monfils, who rolled over a local wild card

    (1) David Ferrer d. (Q) Dustin Brown 5-7, 6-3, 6-2

Ferrer survived Brown--and a hole in the court--in two hours and 33 minutes to reach the second round of the Qatar ExxonMobil Open on Tuesday evening. A tense opening set saw Brown fight off a break point at 0-1 before missing a chance of his own at 2-2. The underdog German eventually seized an upper hand with a love break in the 11th game. Brown battled out of a 15-40 deficit while serving for the set 6-5 before sealing the deal with a clutch hold.

Things got even more interesting when Ferrer's shoe somehow dug a hole in the court just behind the baseline. Play was delayed for almost an hour with Brown serving at 1-2 in the second set. When they finally came back out, it was all Ferrer the rest of the way. Doha's No. 1 seed broke once in the second and three times in the third for his season-opening victory. Next up for Ferrer on Wednesday is Tobias Kamke.

Gael Monfils d. (WC) Mousa Shanan Zayed 6-0, 6-3

Monfils temporarily quieted knee concerns by sprinting past Zayed in 47 minutes during first-round action in Doha on Tuesday. The 77th-ranked Frenchman, who was out from mid-May until mid-September in 2012, dropped serve twice in the second set but converted six of nine break-point chances throughout the match to remain in complete control.

Zayed is an 18-year-old wild card from Qatar who registers at No. 1,851 in the world rankings. The real test for Monfils will come on Wednesday in the form of a second-round showdown with Philipp Kohlschreiber.
