  • Berdych and Tipsarevic headline field in Chennai

    12/31/12 1:23 AM | Cheryl Murray
Berdych and Tipsarevic headline field in Chennai The first tournaments of the new tennis season kick off this week, with Tomas Berdych taking the lead at the Aircel Chennai Open.

After a short December off season, Tomas Berdych, part of the the Davis Cup-winning Czech squad, will be back in action in India. He shares his section of the draw with Marin Cilic, the No. 3 seed from Croatia.

Berdych should be in good shape going into this event with his country's Davis Cup victory still fresh in his mind. He enjoys a first-round bye and awaits the winner of Jan Hajek and popular Indian Somdev Devvarman, who was awarded a wild card into the event.

The first real test for Berdych could come from Yen-Hsun Lu, the No. 7 seed from Taiwan who is seeded to meet the Czech in the quarterfinals. From there, Berdych could face Cilic.

The bottom half of the draw is a bit lighter. Janko Tipsarevic from Serbia anchors this section with Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka rounding out the top 4. Wawrinka shares a quarter with Dutchman Robin Haase, while the next highest seed in Tipsarevic's section is Go Soeda of Japan.

Look for Berdych to come through with the first title of 2013.
