• Tennistalk's 2012 Matches of the Year: Part 1

    12/3/12 4:24 PM | Ricky Dimon
Tennistalk's 2012 Matches of the Year: Part 1 The Tennistalk panel has spoken and it's time to start revealing the best matches of the year. First, a look at some showdowns that deserved honorable mentions despite not quite making the Top 10 cut.

The story of 2012--at least compared to previous years on the ATP World Tour--was parity. Four Grand Slam titles were split among four different players and the result of a such a level playing field was a whole host of memorable matches. Some featured high-quality tennis. Some delivered controversy. Some were tear-jerking. Some produced results that are still hard to believe. And some had it all.

Tennistalk's 2012 Matches of the Year begin with honorable mentions.

    15. Andy Roddick d. Roger Federer 7-6(4), 1-6, 6-4 - Sony Ericsson Open third round

Roddick was 3-21 lifetime against arch-nemesis Federer, but his last matchup against the 17-time Grand Slam champion will go down in history as a win. They combined for 23 aces and just three double-faults before Roddick pulled off the improbable upset in front of an enthralled Miami night crowd.

    14. Rafael Nadal d. Roger Federer 6-7(5), 6-2, 7-6(5), 6-4 - Australian Open semifinals

A pair of epics involving Novak Djokovic sufficiently overshadowed the 27th installment of the Federer-Nadal rivalry. This one wasn't an instant classic, but four entertaining sets required three hours and 42 minutes to be completed. Nadal broke Federer six times to book his place in what prove to be a historical title match.

    13. Novak Djokovic d. Andy Murray 5-7, 7-6(11), 6-3 - Shanghai Rolex Masters final

The Tennistalk panel ranks this as the fourth best non-Grand Slam, non-Olympics match of the year and the third best match of the post-U.S. Open season. An absolutely unbelievable second set saw Djokovic save five championship points as the world No. 1 eventually stole the Shanghai title from Murray.

    12. Roger Federer d. Andy Murray 7-6(5), 6-2 - World Tour Finals semifinals

Federer had been thrashed by Murray at the Olympics and in Shanghai, and he found himself trailing 1-3, 0-30 at the year-end event. Instead of suffering another beatdown, Federer kicked it into a gear that sometimes only Federer can find. The Swiss raced swiftly past Murray and into the London final.

    11. David Ferrer d. Janko Tipsarevic 6-3, 6-7(5), 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(4) - U.S. Open quarterfinals

This was arguably the best match of the year that involved none of the top four players in the world (it finished second in Tennistalk's rankings among such matches). Lasting four hours and 31 minutes on one of tennis' biggest stages, this one had it all: insane rallies, heart-stopping drama, Tipsarevic-inspired controversy, and a fifth-set tiebreaker.

    Other matches that received votes:
Federer d. Del Potro - Olympics
    Rosol d. Nadal - Wimbledon
Djokovic d. Federer - World Tour Finals
    Ferrer d. Almagro - Madrid
Del Potro d. Djokovic - Olympics
    Del Potro d. Roddick - U.S. Open
Isner d. Djokovic - Indian Wells
    Federer d. Benneteau - Wimbledon
Nadal d. Monaco - French Open
    Haas d. Nalbandian - Cincinnati
    Djokovic d. Haas - Toronto
    Berdych d. Federer - U.S. Open
    Murray d. Tsonga - Wimbledon
Stepanek d. Almagro - Davis Cup
    Tsonga d. Raonic - Olympics
    Seppi d. Wawrinka - Rome
    Murray d. Ferrer - Wimbledon
Berdych d. Almagro - Australian Open
    Almagro d. Ferrero - Valencia

And my next 10 posts on this thread don't count!!!

Conspirator , 12/4/12 8:28 PM

Del Potro did not play Djokovic in the USO semifinals

RickyDimon , 12/4/12 9:32 PM

That was a typo. I didn't see it. Thought I typed QF coz I was playing tennis at the time.

Stop picking on me.

I'm off this thread. Get it???

Conspirator , 12/4/12 10:35 PM

What about Djokovic defeating Nadal at AO2012?

scoretracker , 12/5/12 12:35 AM

what about it?

RickyDimon , 12/5/12 1:28 AM

Didn't see any mention as one of the best matches. Maybe I missed it.

scoretracker , 12/5/12 1:57 AM

You missed it. It was in Part 3.

Conspirator , 12/5/12 2:36 AM

Ricky, don't know where you came up with that Gaynor match though. Was that really this year? Is that from a challenger or something?

Conspirator , 12/5/12 2:45 AM

what match?

RickyDimon , 12/5/12 3:09 AM

You two need a thread all to yourselves

ed251137 , 12/5/12 6:26 AM

Too funny! They could be a comedy team! :)

Nativenewyorker , 12/5/12 7:06 AM

chloro: I am the person S/C and her allies refer to as the Pyranha! That was a warning from me that I'm girding up to strike back. lol.

ed251137 , 12/6/12 4:06 PM

oops, didn't read all of the innumerable posts

so we re-write: if only the Ts were hilarious, even once, or even just funny or even just somewhat entertaining the one time

chlorostoma , 12/6/12 4:31 PM

Their modus operandi is to destablise the victim, turn others against the victim, and to make themself out to be superior in every respect. Not much room for humour there:-(
Even when culprits are banned, others arrive to take their place.

ed251137 , 12/6/12 5:50 PM

I think that sums the psychology and m.o. of this kind of person perfectly! I would only add that it's the ultimate act of cowardice in hiding behind an anonymous screen name.

Nativenewyorker , 12/6/12 7:54 PM

Hee haw, they're still foaming at the mouth. The foot and mouth malady is still continuing but has reached epidemic stages. Poor persecuted 'pieces of work' as NNY likes to refer to me.

Glad to see another has joined the dream team. Keep dreaming that you're all so very, very perfect. GIGO.

scoretracker , 12/6/12 10:24 PM

Nothing to do and all day to do it in, that's the mantra of the dream team. The arm chair psychology is so lvery, very pathetic that it's laughable.

scoretracker , 12/6/12 10:28 PM

scoretracker, please provide an up to date status list of which threads you are on and which threads you are off so I know where I can talk about you behind your back. I'm trying to take over as ring leader and this would be quite helpful. Leave out any racism please so your List is not pulled before I get a chance to review.

Conspirator , 12/6/12 10:50 PM

Too good!

Whoopsadaisy - I thought you were on this thread Conspirator. Now I see you're not.

Off to look for you on another thread.

ed251137 , 12/6/12 11:09 PM

Scoretracker has mispelt my name. It's not HeeHaw. It's Eeyore. The aitch is silent.

ed251137 , 12/6/12 11:27 PM

Conspirator, 12/6/12 10:50 PM,

I bow down to you for a most excellent post! Brilliant! I cannot stop laughing! I proudly turn over my crown as chief ringleader to you! LOL!

So here's my question - are you on or off this thread? Inquiring minds want to know! We need to know where we can go so that we can have our little conspiracy meetings in order to plot our next devious action!

Thank you so much! Made my day! :)

Nativenewyorker , 12/7/12 1:09 AM

Conspirator = hawkeye= willmw. Hasn't anyone noticed this, except for one other poster who mentioned hawkeye=conspirator when conspirator was having one of her tantrums with that poster.

Funny how *willmw* enters echoing conspirator's immature mutterings, and makes accusations of racism which is no where to be found. And, who reinforces willmw's imaginary racism? Conspirator, as she has again done ABOVE @10:50pm. At one point WILLMW even forgot to remove Conspirator's pseudo hashtag which was used in a previous post, just seconds previously, the same as conspirator did with her hawkeye nick. You're a joke woman, and totally messed up.

You're not worth answering coz you are an attention seeker, extremely immature, and an harasser. You don't have what it takes to stand alone, but has to have a group backing you, who are amused by your adolescent pseudo-hashtags. It's obvious some of them don't even understand what hashtags mean.

Furthermore, you are trolls, and you mess up every thread with your non-tennis, adolescent garbage. You're insecure and emotionally immature, and you exhibit a tendency to foam at the mouth repeatedly to ensure that you are being heard.

this thread, like all the others has been messed up due to your adolescent behavior. GIGO.

scoretracker , 12/7/12 1:10 AM

Warning, Conspirator = hawkeye = willmw.

scoretracker , 12/7/12 1:50 AM

You only have 3 out of 6 so far.

Conspirator , 12/7/12 2:22 AM

Conspirator, could you please get off this thread right now! I want to say how brilliant you are and I don't want you getting big-headed.

deuce , 12/7/12 8:14 AM

Deuce: For goodness sake dont goat Scores or we'll have another IAOTT outburst and I'm still recovering from the last one.

(typo: that should read goad Scores. OTH perhaps not)

ed251137 , 12/7/12 10:53 AM

Another member of the foot and mouth malady club has arrived, doing what comes naturally to her, foaming at the mouth, with her corny her added..

I seem to bring them out of the woodwork, coz they can't resist taking a dig at me which provides them with such sick pleasure. As usual, the witless fan of the fanged one, has nothing worthwhile to add on the topic of the thread, but just the usual foaming, and wit-LESS nuances.

LOL, the more I visit here I'm convinced the 75 y/o and others have the intelligence of a 3 y/o. Don't let me stop your sick jokes. You and your gang of witless friends force not only me, but many others to keep off the threads and forum. Think about it, who wants to read your childish nonsensical drivel?

Another thread runed by the witless dream team. geez

On cue, 4, 5, 6, 7 ....

scoretracker , 12/8/12 12:42 AM

I suppose saying I'm off a thread, due to the nastiness from a bunch of nit-wits who made it impossible to comment at the time, and who took my words out of context, is such a big deal to these small-minded adolescents, that they have to make it their mantra? what losers!

How many times hasn't a certain drama queen said she's going to stop posting here, or we should all leave, and I'm fed up of reading this and that, or I was thinking of leaving, etc.? Then the others chime in, please stay, we need you, etc., etc. That's easily forgotten, but when others do it then it becomes the theme for everything. Very sick!

scoretracker , 12/8/12 12:55 AM

scrotracker, I would reply but I didn't read your post which was quite tedious and boring as per usual by the way 'coz' I'm off this thread got it?

Conspirator , 12/8/12 3:09 AM

For someone who presumes to dislike me so much, scoretracker certainly doesn't miss a chance to get in another dig! Talk about obsession! And it's always directed at me or something I said, in a way that is meant to demean or ridicule.

I did say that I was going to leave this site. For the record, I made that comment once because of scoretracker's vile, incessant and ongoing hideous and fraudulent attacks on me, my character, my thought, beliefs, motives and intentions. The idea that this person would have the utter gall to talk on my behalf, is disgusting enough!

Unlike scoretracker's numerous melodramatic histrionics to the effect of - I'm on, I'm off, no I'm, no I'm off ad nauseum, I made one comment. There were people who convinced me to stay. It's too bad that no one likes scoretracker enough to do the same.

I actually think that I have hit on something! Maybe that's why scoretracker resorts to this pathetic form of psychodrama! So that someone, anyone, will ask scoretracker to stay! Awww shucks! Too bad! No one wants scoretracker around. So I have to be attacked because people actually want me to stay on this site.

Wow! Jealousy is really an ugly thing, isn't it! Tsk, tsk! I wouldn't be silly enough to go on and on and on and on and on!

You can trash all of us in your neverending quest to stoop lower and lower. But it's not going to work!

In the future, please just make up your mind and spare all of us the endless indecision!

Nativenewyorker , 12/8/12 3:20 AM

@3:09 am. i know you read it.

@3:20am, drama queen, you've said it many times, especially during the time fleur and sienna were posting here. If i had the time I'd find those posts for you, butyou know deep down inside that i'm speaking the truth but you need to save face.

I'm not jealous of you, period. You and your juvenile friends are of zero interest to me.

My decision to stay or leave should be no concern to you, same as if I'm on a thread or off a thread, but you need to embellish it and add importance to it, as an excuse to froth some more. it would behoove you to mind your own business and just concern yourself with little ol YOU, not me.

scoretracker , 12/8/12 4:44 AM

NNY: What puzzles me is the Jekyll and Hyde nature of Score's comments. When discussing tennis she displays her love of the game and contributes thoughtful, well written, well researched arguments. It is even possible to have civilised exchanges without it degenerating into a brawl. But she has a bee in her bonnet on certain subjects e.g. doping when she airs controversial opinions and becomes aggressive if challenged. It is at this point she ceases the discussion and resorts to trolling. When that doesn't work the flaming begins. Any response always ends with her calling a foul which by her rule book justifies a barrage of personal insults. The injunction DNFTT merely serves to make her redouble her efforts.

ed251137 , 12/8/12 5:07 AM

The drama queen: every incident or opportunity, no matter how insignificant, is exploited, exaggerated and if necessary distorted to become an event of dramatic proportions. Everything is elevated to crisis proportions. Histrionics may be present where the person feels she is not the centre of attention but should be.

scoretracker , 12/8/12 5:30 AM

LOL, now they've castrated me. I'm now a continuously referred to as *she*.

Funny, how you lot can't see it's you who get into the middle of a discussion, insert your childish drivel, then destroy the thread. How very pathetic.

The roddick thread was a perfect example where the drama queen killed it with her nastiness, e.g.,. Revisionist history

All drama queen and ed talk about is revisionist history, especially when they are ridiculing other posters. what a sick lot.

scoretracker , 12/8/12 5:38 AM

Again, I reiterate that for someone who presumes to dislike me intensely, how on earth can this person remember what I posted, about whom, when, where, etc.? Now that is obsession!

Scoretracker has pulled this kind of dirty stunt many times before. Throwing out an accusation and then not being able to back it up. I requested specific information about where I posted on another forum, be it tennis-x or I was accused of going on these tennis forums and posting under another screen name and attacking people. I never got one, not one, example from scoretracker! So that means it was fabrication, but it was never retracted. This person doubles down and digs in even when clearly in the wrong without any basis for accusations.

So now I am the drama queen! Let's see, I've been called a rusty violin whose strings would break one day, evil, the devil, told to kill myself by jumping off a bridge, threatened that I would get what's coming to me, what goes around comes around, accused of plotting conspiracies , called the sainted one.... honestly the list is far too long for one post.

Scoretracker - you need to mind your own business and stop reading and committing to memory everything I post on this forum! Don't dump your misery on me! Treat people on this site with respect and you will earn some in return.

Nativenewyorker , 12/8/12 6:20 AM

ed251137, 12/8/12 5:07 AM,

I agree with the Jekyll and Hyde part. As you said, if someone has a different opinion or point of view, that seems to threaten this person greatly. Then they start lashing out in anger and that's when the hysteria sets in. Bizarre!

A forum is a bad place to be if you can't tolerate disagreement. That's why we are here - to discuss and also to have different opinions. But that's not allowed in this person's little world. This is someone who has to be right all the time!

Finally, nobody's been castrated. The emotion and hysterical outbursts are not typical of male posters on this site.

I'm in, no I'm out! No I'm in, goodbye, no I'm in, goodbye for good, not really!

It's funny because you and I are ridiculed for our age, yet then we are called adolescents! I say that someone who can't even get off a topic thread for an hour and has to tell everyone about it, is the adolescent!
