Berdych fights to level tie for Czech Republic World No. 6 Tomas Berdych held on to level the tie for host nation Czech Republic, having outlasted Spain's Nicolas Almagro in five sets. Friday's Davis Cup competition concludes with each side taking a key point in singles.

World No. 6 Tomas Berdych brought the Czech Republic to 1-1 against defending champion Spain after upending world No. 11 Nicolas Almagro in five sets. The 27-year-old converted five of 11 break points through to a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-3 victory in three hours and 58 minutes.

With a two-sets-to-one advantage, Berdych took a quick 2-0 lead in the fourth set. Almagro broke back at 2-3 with a well-timed backhand winner. The Spaniard continued the comeback, jumping out to a 5-0 mark in the 'breaker.

Berdych went ahead 4-2 in the deciding set but was unable to hold the lead. The Czech recovered to hold double break point at 4-3. After missing the two chances, Berdych converted on his third in the game. Two match points came at 5-3 for Berdych, who completed the marathon once Almagro erred on the return.

Berdych ended the night with 13 aces and 52 winners.

Saturday's doubles competition will likely feature Berdych and partner Radek Stepanek facing Spain's Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez.
