  • Ferrer ends World Tour Finals with winning record

    11/11/12 12:33 AM | Ricky Dimon
Ferrer ends World Tour Finals with winning record David Ferrer beats Janko Tipsarevic in the final round-robin match of the week on Saturday. Ferrer, however, was already eliminated due to Juan Martin Del Potro's win over Roger Federer.

David Ferrer wrapped up his World Tour Finals campaign with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory over Janko Tipsarevic on Tuesday night. Ferrer did not have a chance of advancing to the semifinals, but he managed to compile a winning 2-1 record at the year-end event after two hours and seven minutes.

With his hopes of further progress dashed, the fifth-ranked Spaniard came out in a funk. He lost the first four games of the match before pulling within 2-4 thanks to a break in the sixth game. Tipsarevic actually gave breaks back twice, but he finally got the job done with a hold at 5-4.

The rest of the way, however, it was all Ferrer. London's No. 4 seed broke serve twice in the second and three times in the third to race away from a winless opponent. Ferrer appropriately finished the match with a break at 5-1 in the decider, his seventh of the day.

"It was not easy," Ferrer explained, "because I knew before the match.... I began very badly. But in the second set, I played better. It was important because I have more [ranking] points and it's good for the next year."

"I wanted to win a match," said Tipsarevic. "I was feeling better, as you can see in the first set. As the match progressed, I was running out of fuel, and the points, which I was sometimes winning at the beginning of the match, I just ended up losing them."

Ferrer's win gives Roger Federer the top spot in Group B with Juan Martin Del Potro in second. Ferrer finishes 2-1 while Tipsarevic comes in at 0-3 despite finally winning a set.

It's a puzzle what has happened to Tipsaveric. There were glimpses of the game which has earned him his ranking but for the most part he could have been beaten by anybody in the top 200 whether he was ill or not.

Win or lose, it should stand them in good stead for the DC. But the Stepanek/Berdych pairing will be a tough one to beat on their home patch.

Today, Spain's Marcel & Marc were crowned ATP World Tour doubles champions!
They both bit the trophy (like Rafa does!) at the awarding ceremony. :)

What a wonderful surprise to see that Marc & Marcel have taken the WTF doubles trophy. The biting of the trophy was a nice touch and I am sure Rafa smiled when he saw that as I am sure he was watching the match to give support to his friends.

It would be great if Rafa could travel to Prague to support the DC team.

Vamos Marc & Marcel on your great achievement.
