Ferrer still on fire, downs Del Potro David Ferrer stays hot with a three-set victory over Juan Martin Del Potro on Tuesday in London. Ferrer will go up against Roger Federer in his second round-robin match.

An in-form David Ferrer kicked off his World Tour Finals campaign with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win over Juan Martin Del Potro on Tuesday night. Ferrer earned 12 break chances while facing only three as he prevailed in two hours and 16 minutes.

Storming into London with incredible momentum from the first Masters title of his career in Paris, Ferrer wasted no time taking control of this one. The world No. 5 broke serve at 2-1 by forcing Del Potro into a volley error with a well-struck forehand pass. Ferrer, who had saved one break point at 1-1, raced through the rest of his service games and converted his second set point at 5-3 when his opponent netted a forehand.

A huge turning point came with Ferrer poised to break the match wide open at 1-1. Del Potro faced four break points but fought off all of them--with an ace, forehand winner, service winner, and backhand winner. Having refused to fall into an overwhelming deficit, an inspired Argentine saved two game points at 2-1 and eventually broke when Ferrer sent a forehand well long. Del Potro held from there, surviving one break point at 5-3 before closing out the set.

The third set was a microcosm of the whole match, with Ferrer taking a lead and Del Potro battling back. The Spaniard led 0-40 at 1-0 then seized his third break opportunity at 30-40 with a clean forehand winner. He had 3-0 and 4-1 advantages before Del Potro leveled things at 4-4 thanks to a break at 2-4.

Out of almost nowhere, though, Ferrer put a swift end to a seemingly even match. He won eight of the last nine points, including a break at love in the final game.

Ferrer recorded three aces and one double-fault while Del Potro wrapped up his effort with seven aces and four doubles. The second stanza of Group B round-robin action will pit Ferrer against Roger Federer and Del Potro against Janko Tipsarevic.
