  • Federer takes care of Tipsarevic in London opener

    11/6/12 4:23 PM | Ricky Dimon
Federer takes care of Tipsarevic in London opener Roger Federer makes quick work of Janko Tipsarevic on Tuesday in London. Federer awaits either David Ferrer or Juan Martin Del Potro in his second round-robin match.

Two-time defending champion Roger Federer kicked off his 2012 World Tour Finals campaign in routine fashion, defeating Janko Tipsarevic 6-3, 6-1. Federer posted a 1-0 record in Group B round-robin action after one hour and nine minutes.

The world No. 2 got off to an ideal start, holding at love for 1-0 then breaking serve right away with a backhand pass. Federer never came close to giving the break back, as he dropped a mere five points in five service games. He wrapped up the set at 5-3 with his fifth ace.

It was all but over for Tipsarevic after three games in the second. The ninth-ranked Serb, who retired last week against Jerzy Janowicz in the Paris quarterfinals, saved two break points at 1-1 but netted a forehand on his opponent's third chance. Federer, getting better and better as the match progressed, was off to the races. He closed out the victory with his fourth break at 5-1.

The Swiss recorded 24 winners and 16 unforced errors while striking seven aces compared to one double-fault. He will go up against either David Ferrer or Juan Martin Del Potro on Thursday.

Hard to say where Federer's form is at from this.Tipsarevic didn't look 100% physically.Still Fed hit some good down the line backhands which is usually a good sign for him.

keep in mind that this draw only helps Fed in round-robin play

it likely starts hurting him on Sunday
