  • Janowicz beats Simon, continues miracle Paris run

    11/3/12 5:27 PM | Ricky Dimon
Janowicz beats Simon, continues miracle Paris run Jerzy Janowicz has made it all the way to the Paris final after overpowering Gilles Simon on Saturday. Janowicz awaits either David Ferrer or Michael Llodra.

The ATP Would Tour saved its biggest surprise of 2012 for last.

In the final regular-season event of the year, qualifier Jerzy Janowicz finds himself in the title match of the BNP Paribas Masters. Janowicz continued his dream run on Saturday afternoon by defeating Gilles Simon 6-4, 7-5 in one hour and 29 minutes.

The 21-year-old once again showcased all the shots that had previously carried him to upsets of Philipp Kohlschreiber, Marin Cilic, Andy Murray, and Janko Tipsarevic. He fired 12 aces while serving at 69 percent and used huge forehands and crafty drop-shots to completely befuddle Simon.

One break in each set was the difference, because Janowicz did not face a single break point the entire way. He struck at 2-2 in the first and served it out from there, clinching set point at 5-4 with a perfect forehand winner.

Simon took care of his first five service games in the second, but he could never gain any real traction against an on-fire opponent. The 20th-ranked Frenchman eventually dropped serve at 5-5 when Janowicz delivered an unreachable drop-shot. Janowicz converted his second match point in the 12th game with yet another dropper, one that Simon could just barely touch with his racket.

The 6'8'' Polish phenom blasted 39 winners to Simon's 10. He will go up against either David Ferrer or Michael Llodra in Sunday's final.
