World No. 5 David Ferrer is through to the quarterfinal in Paris after downing 16th seed Stanislas Wawrinka late Thursday. The veteran moves on to face world No. 7 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga for a place in the semifinal.
Fourth seed David Ferrer advanced to the quarterfinal late Thursday, having upended Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka in three sets. The 30-year-old Spaniard tallied 22 winners through to a 6-2. 4-6, 6-2 victory in two hours and three minutes.
After splitting the first two sets, Ferrer led 3-0 in the decider. Wawrinka had three chances to break at 2-4, but was unable to convert. Triple match point came at 5-2 for the veteran, who closed the match once the Swiss hit a forehand long.
Ferrer ended the contest with five of 14 break points converted.
He is slated to meet 6th seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarterfinals. The Frenchman defeated 11th seed Nicolas Almagro in the round of 16, 7-6(4), 7-6(3).
