World No. 3 Andy Murray made a successful start to his Masters 1000 Paris campaign, having upended French wildcard Paul-Henri Mathieu Wednesday evening. The Scot improved to 5-0 over the veteran after winning in straight sets.
Third seed Andy Murray is through to the third round following his straight-set ousting of France's Paul-Henri Mathieu on Wednesday. The 25-year-old converted four of five break points through to a 7-5, 6-3 victory in 93 minutes.
A close first set contained no service breaks until the 11th game. After pulling ahead 6-5, Murray closed the opening set as Mathieu erred on the return. Murray continued the momentum to lead 2-0 and 4-1 in the second set. Match point came at 5-3 for the Scot, who ended the night when Mathieu hit a double-fault.
Murray completed the second-round effort with 24 winners and 27 of 32 first-service points captured.
He is scheduled to take on qualifier Jerzy Janowicz for a place in the quarterfinals. Janowicz defeated 13th seed Marin Cilic in the second round, 7-6(6), 6-2.
