  • Berdych, Nishikori advance in Paris

    10/31/12 3:11 AM | Ricky Dimon
Berdych, Nishikori advance in Paris Tomas Berdych takes care of Andreas Seppi in straight sets on Tuesday in Paris. Berdych is joined in the third round by Kei Nishikori, who ousted Benoit Paire.

    (5) Tomas Berdych d. Andreas Seppi 7-6(6), 6-2

Berdych survived a tough first set then raced away from Seppi to win his BNP Paribas Masters opener on Tuesday night. The No. 5 seed struck five aces and three double-faults to book a third-round spot after one hour and 40 minutes.

A back-and-forth first set saw Berdych give back a break at 2-0 before pulling through a close tiebreaker. From there it was all over for Seppi, who lost the first four games of the second. The 22nd-ranked Italian could not convert a break chance midway through the set and missed a deuce opportunity with his opponent serving for the match at 5-2. Next up for Berdych is either Richard Gasquet or Kevin Anderson.

    (15) Kei Nishikori d. Benoit Paire 7-6(2), 6-2

Not surprisingly, Nishikori's straight-set win over Paire in the Paris second round featured a few twists and turns and plenty of theatrics. A close first set saw both players lead by a break--first Paire and then Nishikori--before a tiebreaker had to decide it. The world No. 16 earned an immediate mini-break for 1-0 and never looked back, dominating the 'breaker seven points to two.

After being reported by a linesperson, Paire received a warning for breaking his racket in the bathroom in between sets. A disgruntled Frenchman quickly fell behind 3-0 in the second and never recovered. It ended at 2-5, 15-40, when Paire stopped play down match point to make a challenge. Nishikori's ball was well inside the line, thus clinching victory for the Japanese star. He awaits either Gilles Simon or Victor Hanescu.
