American Sam Querrey is into the Paris second round after a shoulder injury sent Spaniard Fernando Verdasco out of the tournament.
Fernando Verdasco was in a bad way headed into the second set of his first-round match against American Sam Querrey. Verdasco was barely a factor in the first set, with perhaps his shoulder limiting his movement. He struggled particularly on serve, putting in just 50% of his first serves in the opening frame and donated four double-faults to the Querrey cause.
The second set was more misery for Verdasco. The Spaniard only managed one service game; he held, but served at 30% and faced another break point. Only two games into the second set, Verdasco determined that he was unable to continue and he retired, giving Querrey the victory in just 30 minutes on court.
Querrey's win sends him into a tough second round against Novak Djokovic.
