World No. 7 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is through to the round of 16 at the Masters 1000 Paris, having ousted compatriot Julien Benneteau late Tuesday. The sixth seed moves on to face Nicolas Almagro or Albert Ramos for a place in the quarterfinal.
World No. 7 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga advanced to the round of 16 after upending fellow Frenchman Julien Benneteau in three sets. The 27-year-old collected 15 aces through to a 6-2, 4-6, 7-6(2) victory in two hours and 25 minutes.
With the match level at a set apiece, Tsonga broke to lead 5-3 in the final set. The sixth seed was unable to close the match as Benneteau fought back to 4-5. Tsonga led 2-1 and 4-2 in the deciding-set tie-break, eventually reaching match points at 6-2.
The world No. 7 ended the evening with 38 winners and 45 of 62 first-service points won.
He will take on 11th seed Nicolas Almagro or Albert Ramos for a place in the quarterfinals.
