Simon sinks Baghdatis in Paris first round Gilles Simon takes out Marcos Baghdatis in straight sets on Monday in Paris. Simon will go up against Victor Hanescu during second-round action on Wednesday.

Gilles Simon kicked off his BNP Paribas Masters campaign with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Marcos Baghdatis. Simon needed one hour and 17 minutes to set up a second-round meeting with Victor Hanescu, who took Roger Federer's place as a lucky loser.

Baghdatis had a tough time penetrating his opponent's defense and the result was an error-strewn performance. The 32nd-ranked Cypriot dropped serve at 1-2 in the first set but recovered immediately to get back on serve after the fifth game. However, Baghdatis had no chance to right the ship when he got broken again at the worst possible time--5-6.

With a lead in hand, Simon picked up the pace and started to play the match on his terms as opposed to lulling Baghdatis into mistakes. The Frenchman converted his third break chance at 2-1 for a quick advantage in the second set and he secured another break at 4-1, this time at love. Simon wrapped up the proceedings one game later with a routine service hold.

The world No. 20 finished with five aces and two double-faults while winning 81 percent of his first-serve points. He positively abused his opponent's serve, winning more than half the points even when Baghdatis put his first delivery in play.
