• Berdych headlines Paris quarter after Federer pullout

Berdych headlines Paris quarter after Federer pullout Roger Federer didn't quite defend his Basel title on Sunday, just barely relinquishing it to Juan Martin Del Potro, and he won't defend this week in Paris. The world No. 1 has withdrawn, meaning Tomas Berdych headlines the top quarter of the draw.

Tomas Berdych will be the highest-seeded player in the top quarter of the BNP Paribas Masters draw after Roger Federer withdrew on Sunday. Federer, the 2011 champion, just lost to Juan Martin Del Potro 6-4, 6-7(5), 7-6(3) in a thrilling Basel title match.

Berdych, in fine form heading into the last two tournaments of the year, is now a considerable favorite to reach the Paris semifinals. The sixth-ranked Czech will open against either Martin Klizan or Andreas Seppi before potentially running into fellow seeds Richard Gasquet and Kei Nishikori.

Nishikori is now the lone seed in his eighth of the bracket. He awaits either Benoit Paire or Pablo Andujar before a third-round matchup that will no longer come against Federer. Lucky loser Victor Hanescu took the world No. 1's place and he will open against either Marcos Baghdatis or Gilles Simon.

Gasquet, meanwhile, will kick off his campaign with either Kevin Anderson or Thomaz Bellucci. The Frenchman is 10th in the race to London's World Tour Finals, but virtually ninth with Rafael Nadal out for the season. Gasquet will have to outscore Janko Tipsarevic by more than 300 points to qualify.
