Federer cruises past Paire, into Basel semis Roger Federer makes quick work of Benoit Paire on Friday in Basel. Federer is through to a semifinal showdown with fellow veteran Paul-Henri Mathieu.

Roger Federer picked up the pace on Friday at the Swiss Indoors Basel, crushing Benoit Paire 6-2, 6-2 in 54 minutes. Federer struck four aces and won 24 of 25 first-serve points to storm into the semifinals.

Facing Federer for the first time, Paire got off to a decent enough start by holding easily in the opening game. However, it was all downhill from there for the 46th-ranked Frenchman. Federer broke for 2-1 and 5-2 before serving out the first set.

More of the same continued in the second, with the top-ranked Swiss seizing complete control right away. Federer dropped a mere four points in four service games after losing only three in the first set.

Paire wrapped up his effort with seven aces, but he double-faulted five times. Federer converted four of 12 break points on his way to a clash against another Frenchman, Paul-Henri Mathieu.
