Mathieu edges Davydenko, Paire to meet Federer Paul-Henri Mathieu gets past Nikolay Davydenko in three tight sets on Thursday in Basel. Mathieu is joined in the quarterfinals by Benoit Paire, who beat Lukasz Kubot and will face Roger Federer.

    (WC) Paul-Henri Mathieu d. Nikolay Davydenko 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-4

Mathieu held 15 of 16 service games to beat Davydenko in two hours and 16 minutes while booking a spot in the quarterfinals of the Swiss Indoors Basel on Thursday. The world No. 101 got off to a fast start by saving all three of the break points he faced in set one and using a single break of his own to serve it out at 5-3.

Both the second and third sets were more competitive. Davydenko fought off one break point to force a tiebreaker in the middle frame before dominating it seven points to two. The 42nd-ranked Russian seized even more momentum by breaking right away in the decider. Mathieu, however, broke right back for 1-1 and ended the match on an eight-point winning streak, taking both the ninth and 10th games at love. Next up for the Frenchman is Grigor Dimitrov.

    Benoit Paire d. (Q) Lukasz Kubot 6-4, 6-4

Paire earned a place in his fifth ATP quarterfinal of the season and first since 's-Hertogenbosch in June by dismissing Kubot on Thursday in Basel. The 46th-ranked Frenchman held nine of 10 service games and won 89 percent of his first-serve points to advance in one hour and 26 minutes. He also set up a first-time showdown with world No. 1 Roger Federer.

Both players serve horribly in the opener, but Kubot was broken twice and his opponent just once before Paire served it out at 5-4. The 67th-ranked Pole stayed on level terms en route to 4-4 in the second only to crack in the ninth game. Paire struggle to finish it off, but he saved Kubot's only break chance of the set and converted his first match point at ad-in.
