David Ferrer has handed friend and compatriot Nicolas Almgaro his 12th loss in 12 meetings between the Davis Cup teammates.
Nicolas Almagro has a matchup problem with countryman David Ferrer. Of their meetings, Almagro has never managed to get a victory, though he has manged to win the occasional set from his pal.
There wasn't a great difference between Almagro and Ferrer in this match except that Ferrer played the big points with the mental toughness that he's become known for. The Spaniard fought off all four break points against him in the second set and converted on a single break point in both the first and second sets.
Almagro actually had a shot at going up a break in the second set. Ferrer didn't get his chance to break until Almagro was serving at 5-5 to do his part to force the tiebreaker. But he had a mental lapse and Ferrer was waiting to take advantage and finish off the match with a 6-3, 7-5 scoreline.
Ferrer has a showdown with surprise semifinalist Ivan Dodig, who upset Marin Cilic in the late match on Friday evening.
