It was a day of retirement for a pair of seeds at the Valencia Open. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Janko Tipsarevic, two players who are still looking for spots at the World Tour Finals.
No. 3 seed Janko Tipsarevic came into Valencia with a dodgy shoulder that he re-aggravated in Vienna. With The Paris Masters next week and a possible showing in London in two weeks, the Serb's retirement should not have come as a big surprise. Tipsarevic completed 9 games before calling it quits.
The retirement sends Frenchman Gilles Simon into the second round.
Tournament No. 2 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga also retired from his match against Xavier Malisse of Belgium.
The Frenchman had already gone down a break in the first set, trailing 1-3 when he said he could no longer continue. Malisse will take on Austria's Jurgen Melzer in round 2.
