David Ferrer had to fight for his win against Belgian Olivier Rochus; the Spaniard advanced to the second round at the Valencia Open.
Top seed David Ferrer just edged out world No. 104 Olivier Rochus 7-5, 7-5 to gain entry into the second round. Ferrer looked rusty, with his groundstrokes landing awry more often than ordinary.
The Spaniard was fortunate that Rochus suffered a few mental lapses at crucial times in the match. The first set alone featured five combined break points for both players, but it was Rochus who buckled trying to force a tiebreaker, and Ferrer sneaked away with the first set.
Rochus went up a break first in the second set, but his success was short-lived. Ferrer quickly secured the break back again and finally, after more than a dozen chances, got the match-winning break while Rochus served at 5-6 to stay alive.
Ferrer will take on countryman Albert Ramos in the second round.
