  • Del Potro Vienna victory tightens WTF race

    10/22/12 3:59 AM | Johan Lindahl
Del Potro Vienna victory tightens WTF race Juan Martin Del Potro is making a race out of the final two weeks of the regular ATP season as the No. 7 in the points chase heads for Basel this week after winning the Vienna ATP stop.

The Argentine beat Slovenian qualifier Grega Zemlja 7-5, 6-3 and now heads to Switzerland to challenge Roger Federer as second seed in Basel. Del Potro won his third title of the season and regained a huge amount of confidence after being out a month with a wrist injury.

"I'm looking to keep improving, keep playing at this level and hopefully qualify for London. Things are looking better for me, I have my chances. But there are two big events next week (500 tournaments Basel and Valencia) coming up. Everyone has a chance to improve his point totals."

Del Potro stands provisional seventh in the points race for one of three remaining positions in the London field from November 5.

Zemlja, ranked 70th, had already set several personal bests during his unexpected run this week, beating Tommy Haas for a first top 20 win, reaching the final over Janko Tipsarevic for a first top 10 victory and raising his level consistently throughout the best week of his career. Del Potro added Vienna to trophies claimed this season in Marseille and Estoril. He now owns 12 titles in 17 finals.
