Third seed Richard Gasquet is through to the second round in Basel after rallying to upend Dutchman Robin Haase in three sets. The Frenchman moves on to face either Guillermo Garcia-Lopez or wildcard Marco Chiudinelli in the next round.
World No. 13 Richard Gasquet survived a difficult opening-round match against Robin Haase late Monday. The 26-year-old Frenchman fell behind a set before sealing the victory in three, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
After splitting the first two sets, Gasquet rallied to secure service breaks at 1-1 and 4-2 in the deciding set. The third seed completed the one-hour, 44-minute match with 10 aces and 44 of 56 first-service points captured.
Gasquet will take on either Spain’s Guillermo Garcia-Lopez or Swiss wildcard Marco Chiudinelli for a place in the quarterfinals.
