The top two seeds at the If Stockholm Open remain intact, with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Tomas Berdych advancing to Saturday's semifinals.
Tomas Berdych def. Mikhail Youzhny 6-3, 7-6(2)
No. 2 seed Tomas Berdych defeated Mikhail Youzny in two entertaining sets to earn his spot in the Stockholm semifinals. With this win, Berdych leveled his head-to-head record against Youzhny to six match wins each.
The first set of this quarterfinal encounter wasn't as routine as the scoreline would suggest. Youzhny had six chances to break Berdych's serve, but the Czech was mentally tough on the important points and held him off each time. Meanwhile, Berdych secured two of five break point chances for the one-set lead.
Berdych had a bit of a mental lapse in the second set, letting Youzhny get a toehold in the match on a weak service game. The Russian was able to force a tiebreaker, but Berdych was by far the better player and closed out the match in straight sets.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (1) def. Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-3, 6-4
Top seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga did not have much difficulty getting past Sergiy Stakhovsky. The Frenchman donated a noticeable number of unforced errors to the Stakhovsky cause, which kept the match closer than it might have otherwise been. But play was dominated by Tsonga, who showed off his variety of shots in the straight-set victory.
The Ukraine's Stakhovsky struggled to hold onto his own serve. Tsonga earned 13 break-point chances in the two-set match, converting three.
Tsonga will take on Marcos Baghdatis in Saturday's semis.
