The top seed remained intact in Stockholm, with No. 1 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and No. 2 Tomas Berdych moving safely into the If Stockholm Open quarterfinals.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (1) def. Go Soeda 6-2, 7-6(6)
This match could have been more complicated for France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who is trying to seal up a spot in the eight-man end-of-year event in London. Go Soeda of Japan did not present much of a problem for Tsonga in the first set. The No. 1 seed snagged a pair of service breaks to take the lead.
But Soeda found his game in the second set. He was able to trade breaks of serve with the Frenchman to force a tiebreaker. Soeda earned a mini-break and had the set on his serve at 5-4, but squandered the chance with errors. Tsonga took advantage of the lapse in concentration to close out proceedings at 8-6.
Tsonga will take on Sergiy Stakhovsky in the quarters.
Tomas Berdych (2) def. Jurgen Zopp 6-1, 6-4
The Czech Republic's Tomas Berdych had a routine path to the quarters. The No. 2 seed did not drop serve once to Estonia's Jurgen Zopp en route to a one hour and eleven minute straight set win.
Zopp was completely out-matched in the first set. He won just 12 points for the entire set, seven on serve and five with his return game. Berdych secured two service breaks to take a commanding lead.
The Estonian put in a better show in the second set. He managed to hold Berdych to just one service break, but he still wasn't able to make a dent on the Berdych serve.
Berdych will battle No. 6 seed Mikhail Youzhny in the quarterfinals.
