Andreas Seppi takes care of Igor Sijsling in straight sets on Thursday in Moscow. Seppi is joined in the quarterfinals by Edouard Roger-Vasselin, who upset Alexandr Dolgopolov in a third-set tiebreaker.
(2) Andreas Seppi d. Igor Sijsling 7-5, 6-2
Seppi got off to a slow start but won 12 of the last 15 games to defeat Sijsling in the second round of the Kremlin Cup on Thursday afternoon. Sijsling raced to a 4-1 lead in the first set but began to crumble when he dropped serve at 4-2. The 77th-ranked Dutchman took care of his next service game, but another donation at 5-5 cost him the opener.
After closing out set one on his racket, Seppi took complete control with another break at 2-2 in the second. Moscow's No. 2 seed ended the match on a five-game winning streak, adding a final break at 4-2 for insurance. Seppi wrapped up his effort with nine aces and no double-faults. The 25th-ranked Italian set up a quarterfinal clash against Tatsuma Ito after one hour and seven minutes.
(Q) Edouard Roger-Vasselin d. (1) Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-3, 5-7, 7-6(6)
Roger-Vasselin saved four match points and outlasted Dolgopolov in two hours and 23 minutes on Thursday in Moscow. After using one break to cruise through the first set, Roger-Vasselin went up a break in the second. Dolgopolov, however, woke up just in time and broke back twice--including at 6-5 to set up a dramatic third set.
Both players held the entire way, but not before Roger-Vasselin trailed 15-40 at 5-6. The 116th-ranked Frenchman fought off both match points to force a tiebreaker then survived two more at 4-6 and 5-6 in the decider. He ended the match with four consecutive points, converting his first chance at 7-6 with a forehand winner. Roger-Vasselin awaits either Ivo Karlovic or Alex Bogomolov in the quarterfinals.
