  • Basel prepares for returning Federer

    10/18/12 7:09 PM | Johan Lindahl
Basel prepares for returning Federer Roger Federer is back in Basel and getting sucked into the hectic round of sponsor activities and appearances which generally characterize his days before the start of the Swiss Indoors.

The world No. 1, who lost to Andy Murray in the Shanghai semifinals, will be looking for a sixth title in his hometown after winning five of the last six editions.

He is also fighting to hold off Novak Djokovic, the Shanghai champion who is trying to close in on regaining No. 1 status. Federer has winner's points to defend in Basel.

The event is all but planned around the Swiss hero. As usual, the top seed will start in the first round on Monday evening at a precise hour immediately following the traditional opening ceremonies at the St. Jakobshalle.

This year's ceremony will honor Swiss Olympic athletes and is marking a century of Swiss games participation. The winner will come as result of a public vote which has been held online via various national media and will determining an all-time list of national sporting greats.

It's not unthinkable that tennis ace Federer could be dueling in the balloting with a World Cup skier, ice hockey player, or Moto GP rider.

This is crazy.. but I hope he has his focus set on winning the Basel Tournament...

From twitter:

Federer says he tries to play also in Bercy, but after Basel will have to reconsider and see how he is doing. RF has to defend 3000 pts, 3 titles in 3 weeks. "Its a huge mountain ahead of me. No 1 is not in my hands anymore."

I mentioned this earlier. I know Fed is a smart guy and he won't over-exert himself just to try to get to year end #1.

More likely he's realized that it's a long shot. It would be different if he was in control but even if he won all three, Nole could still relatively easily grab the year end No. 1 so why bother.

We will see, no?

Federer could even end up as YE #3 back where he started at the beginning of the year.

nadline, at first I thought you were joking but if Muzz wins Basel, Paris and WTF, Fed would have to work pretty hard to accumulate an additional 1300 points that would be required to stay ahead of him.
