Karlovic beats Bolelli, Rosol takes out Istomin Ivo Karlovic battles past Simone Bolelli on Wednesday in Moscow. Lukas Rosol also advances, earning a quarterfinal spot at the expense of Denis Istomin.

    Ivo Karlovic d. Simone Bolelli 6-4, 7-6(4)

Karlovic broke serve three times, an especially surprising accomplishment on an indoor hard court, to defeat Bolelli in one hour and 41 minutes during first-round action at the Kremlin Cup on Wednesday afternoon. The 6'10'' Croat converted three of four break chances, so it actually did not matter that he dropped serve once in each set.

Bolelli's breaks normally would have been enough to get the best of Karlovic, but he simply could not win second-serve points. As a result, the 79th-ranked Italian was pushed to a tiebreaker in the second set and that's when Karlovic's serve finally proved to be the difference. The world No. 130 will go up against Alex Bogomolov for a spot in the quarterfinals.

    Lukas Rosol d. (6) Denis Istomin 4-6, 6-4, 6-3

Rosol recovered from a set down to beat Istomin and book a place in the quarterfinals after one hour and 58 minutes on Wednesday. Istomin needed only one break before serving out the first set at 5-4, and he did not give away the momentum until late in set two. The sixth-seeded Uzbek dropped serve for the first time all day when it mattered most at 4-5.

With momentum in hand, Rosol continued to hold easily in the decider. Again, the 88th-ranked Czech struck at a crucial moment--this time with Istomin serving at 3-4. Rosol held easily one game later to wrap up the proceedings. Istomin finished with 10 aces and no double-faults but he was thoroughly outclassed from the baseline. Rosol awaits either Viktor Troicki or Malek Jaziri.
