  • Del Potro working for London place

    10/17/12 8:49 PM | Johan Lindahl
Del Potro working for London place Juan Martin Del Potro's dream of reaching a place in the eight-man ATP year-end event is driving his tennis as he returns to autumn action at the Erste Bank event in Vienna after a wrist injury layoff .

The Argentine stands provisional seventh in a season points chase which has three more weeks to run before the start of the eight-man event on November 5 in London. With three places in the London field still open, the likely injury absence of Rafael Nadal could mean that four more players have a chance to reach the field.

"I'm very exited about trying to qualify," said Del Potro. "I need to do well here and at my next event (Basel) in order to have a chance though. I have to play consistently this week, it would be great to win the title here for the first time. That would help my chances."

Del Potro said that his month off since playing in a losing Davis Cup effort had a positive effect. "I followed my rehab programme in Buenos Aires, working with both my doctor and my physio. Right now I'm feeling fit and healthy. I'm hoping for my first title here on my third try."

Del Potro is in a tight race with Czech Tomas Berdych and Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga among others.
