  • Bogomolov defeats Davydenko in Moscow opener

    10/16/12 7:18 PM | Ricky Dimon
Bogomolov defeats Davydenko in Moscow opener Alex Bogomolov takes out Nikolay Davydenko in straight sets on Tuesday in Moscow. Bogomolov is joined in the second round by Carlos Berlocq, who came back to beat Andrey Kuznetsov.

    Alex Bogomolov d. (5) Nikolay Davydenko 7-5, 6-4

Bogomolov broke serve six times in 11 return games to dismiss Davydenki in one hour and 34 minutes during first-round action at the Kremlin Cup on Tuesday evening. The world No. 96 had a terrible time holding on to leads, but he managed to break at the end of each set to win it in straights.

After getting broken at 5-6 in the opener, Davydenko fell behind 3-0 and and 4-1 in set two. Moscow's No. 5 seed did well to get back on level terms, but he put himself in a 0-40 hole at 4-5. Bogomolov capitalized on his third match point at 30-40 to book a spot in the second round. He awaits either Ivo Karlovic or Simone Bolelli.

    (7) Carlos Berlocq d. (WC) Andrey Kuznetsov 1-6, 6-4, 6-3

Kuznetsov had won three straight Challenger events on clay, but a transition to a different level and a different surface proved to be too much for him on Tuesday. It started off well enough for the 21-year-old Russian, as he broke serve twice and dropped a mere four points in his first four service games. He also held comfortably en route to 3-4 in the second set.

After missing a host of break chances, however, Kuznetsov suddenly crumbled. Out of nowhere he was broken at 3-4 and 4-5, thus being forced to play a third set. Berlocq had seized the momentum and he did not let go of it in the decider. The seventh-seeded Argentine broke and 4-2 and eventually served out the match with little trouble at 5-3. Next up for Berlocq is either Benjamin Becker or Jerzy Janowicz.
