World No. 1 Roger Federer continued his run at the Masters 1000 Shanghai, having upended Croatia's Marin Cilic in straight sets. The top seed is through to take on reigning US Open champion Andy Murray for a place in the final.
World No. 1 Roger Federer advanced to the final four in Shanghai following his straight-set victory over world No. 16 Marin Cilic. The 31-year-old Swiss converted five of seven break points en route to a 6-3, 6-4 win in 82 minutes.
Federer broke to 3-2 after losing a 2-0 edge in the opening set. The Swiss held double match point at 5-3, then closed once Cilic erred on the backhand wing.
Cilic had two chances to break early in set two, but was unable to convert either point. A steadied Federer took a key service break to 3-1. The veteran was broken in the ninth game, but regrouped to hold a second match point at 5-4. A final groundstroke error from Cilic sealed the match for the top seed, 6-3, 6-4.
Federer completed the quarterfinal with 26 winners and eight aces.
He is through to face world No. 3 Andy Murray in the semifinals. The Scot rallied to defeat veteran Radek Stepanek in the quarterfinals, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
