    Federer rallies to reach Shanghai quarterfinals World No. 1 Roger Federer is through to the final eight at the Masters 1000 Shanghai after rallying to defeat compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka in three sets. The top seed will take on 10th seed Marin Cilic for a place in the semifinals.

    Roger Federer survived an extended round of 16 battle with 13th seed Stanislas Wawrinka late Thursday. The top seed dropped the opening set in 33 minutes, then recovered to seal the victory in an hour and 57 minutes, 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-0.

    After saving multiple break point at 4-4 in set two, Federer went on to lead 3-1 in the tiebreak. Wawrinka fought back to level at three points apiece. The world No. 1 regained the edge to 4-3, then had triple set point at 6-3. A backhand error from Wawrinka closed the 'breaker at seven points to four.

    Federer continued the effort to lead 5-0 in the deciding set. Match point came quickly for the 31-year-old, who ended the contest with a forehand winner.

    Federer completed the match with six aces, four service breaks at 28 winners.

    He is slated to face 10th seed Marin Cilic in the quarterfinals. Cilic rallied to upend Spain's Fernando Verdsaco in the third round, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.

By the time I switched the TV I found FED in an awful situation, getting off guard, making an awful lot of errors on both sides, serving poorly and appeared very sluggish. How on earth did Stan miss those opportunities? Conspiracy theorists would speculate a must lose syndrome virus afflicting Stan and what was the third set all about. Of course Fed as always found an opening and once he found that the Express Train rolled with a failed break.

Oh Keli,
Correct the headline. Fed did not win in straight sets.

Stan really should have won this. Was the better player for the first two sets but Fed upped his game in the breaker at the same time as Stan seemed to get a little tight. In the third Wawrinka had a massive melt down and just couldn't play tennis anymore. 5 points in the whole set.

Gone past Johny Mac with this win. 870 wins and 194 losses. If wins against Cilic, only Connors, Lendl and Vilas ahead of him in match wins!!

@velliat53
wrongly said
federer goes past agasii with 871 wins
mcenroe has 875
so he need 5 more wins to get past mcenroe
