Jo-Wilfried Tsonga gets past fellow Frenchman Benoit Paire in two tight sets on Wednesday at the Shanghai Masters. Alexandr Dolgopolov also advances by taking out Gilles Simon.
(5) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga d. Benoit Paire 7-6(7), 7-5
Tsonga survived a back-and-forth thriller against Paire on Wednesday evening to book a third-round spot at the Shanghai Rolex Masters after one hour and 55 minutes. The first five games featured four breaks, with Paire giving one back at 1-0 and Tsonga returning the favor at 2-2. Both players held from there en route to a wild tiebreaker.
Tsonga had quadruple set point at 6-2 only to see his opponent reel off five in a row for a 7-6 lead. The fifth-seeded Frenchman answered with three straight points of his own to win it.
More of the same continued in the second, as Tsonga broke immediately for 1-0 then lost serve twice consecutively to fall behind 3-1. Paire had a game point on his own serve for 4-1 but could not convert and was eventually broken. The final turning point came at 5-5 when the 52nd-ranked Frenchman dropped a marathon service game. Tsonga closed things out at 6-5, sealing victory with his 10th ace.
Alexandr Dolgopolov d. (15) Gilles Simon 6-3, 6-4
Dolgopolov saved all four for the break points he faced to cruise past Simon in one hour and 15 minutes on Wednesday. The Ukrainian broke right away en route to a 3-0 lead in the first set and never looked back. Although he served poorly (51 percent), Dolgopolov thoroughly out-classed his opponent from the baseline to make way for a comfortable victory. The world No. 20 will face Andy Murray for a place in the quarterfinals.
