  • Federer outlasts Lu

    10/10/12 3:42 PM | Kelli DeMario
Federer outlasts Lu World No. 1 Roger Federer made a successful start to his Masters 1000 Shanghai campaign, having ousted qualifier Yen-Hsun Lu in straight sets. The top seed is through to face compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka for a place in the quarterfinals.

World No. 1 Roger Federer advanced to the round of 16 after upending Chinese Taipei's Yen-Hsun Lu in straight sets. The 31-year-old Swiss held 11 of 11 service games en route to a 6-3, 7-5 victory in 81 minutes.

Federer served for the opening set at 5-3, closing once Lu hit a backhand into the net. After missing two break chances early in set two, Federer held double break point at 5-5. Lu committed a costly double-fault to fall behind 5-6. Triple match point came in short order for the top seed, who ended the match as Lu erred on the return.

Federer completed the second-round effort with 22 winners and five aces.

He is scheduled to take on fellow Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka in the next round. Wawrinka held on to defeat Denis Istomin in the second round, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

Lu tried his best but the little bit rusty Fed was too good for him.

Stan OTOH is bringing it to Fed now, breaking Fed and now has to serve for the first set.

We he has beaten Fed in the past, albeit on clay, so perhaps he will pull it off a 2nd time. Interesting scenario.

Stan makes some poor shot selections there, allowing Fed to break him in the second set. I doubt Stan can win this match. He's one who can stretch the top four guys but unable to beat them most of the time.
