Viktor Troicki and Feliciano Lopez were successful in their opening matches at the Shanghai Masters.
Viktor Troicki def. Mikhail Youzhny 6-3, 2-6, 6-4
Serbia's Viktor Troicki secured an impressive three-set victory over Russia's Mikhail Youzhny. The Russian had a great fall lead-up to Shanghai, with a semifinal in St. Petersburg and a quarter in Beijing, but he was unable to withstand Troicki on Tuesday.
Troicki served up 15 aces, and except for a poorly played second set, he was the better player in the match. Youzhny was able to snag a pair of service breaks that went unanswered in the second set, but it was Troicki who prevailed in the third to advance.
Feliciano Lopez def. Alejandro Falla 6-3, 1-6, 6-3
Feliciano Lopez needed three sets to take out Colombian Alejandro Falla. The world No. 29 was dismal in the middle set, where he was broken early twice to allow Falla back in the match.
Fortunately for the Spaniard's camp, he was able to keep his head in the deciding set, which he finished with three aces and a single match-winning break of serve.
Lopez will take on tricky German veteran Philipp Kohlschreiber in the second round.
