Gilles Simon rolls over Jurgen Melzer in straight sets on Tuesday in Shanghai. Simon is joined in the second round by Radek Stepanek, who defeated Lleyton Hewitt.
(15) Gilles Simon d. Jurgen Melzer 6-4, 6-2
Simon served at a woeful 48 percent but thoroughly out-classed Melzer from the baseline to book a spot in the second round of the Shanghai Rolex Masters after one hour and 21 minutes of play on Tuesday afternoon. Melzer started off well enough, but the 31-year-old Austrian never recovered after getting broken in the fifth game of the match. Simon saved three break points in the first set before closing it out at 5-4.
Melzer had no chance in the second as he donated serve twice and earned zero break points of his own. Simon, who recorded a modest two aces and three double-faults, eventually sealed the deal with a final routine hold at 5-2. The 18th-ranked Frenchman will go up against Alexandr Dolgopolov on Wednesday.
Radek Stepanek d. (WC) Lleyton Hewitt 7-5, 6-1
Stepanek did not face a single break point as he cruised past Hewitt in one hour and 25 minutes on Tuesday evening. Hewitt managed to take care of his first five service games, but he cracked with the pressure on at 5-6 in the opener. Stepanek converted his second break chance of the day to steal the set when it mattered most.
From there it was all over for Hewitt. The 31-year-old Australian won a mere four points in his last four return games, so two donations of his own serve were two too many. Stepanek finished the job in routine fashion at 5-1. Next up for 33-year-old Czech is Bangkok champion Richard Gasquet, who remained in fine form with an easy win over Brian Baker on Monday.
