Tokyo finalists Kei Nishikori and Milos Raonic pick up wins in Shanghai on Tuesday. Marcos Baghdatis, a Tokyo semifinalist, also advances.
(14) Kei Nishikori d. (WC) Di Wu 6-2, 6-4
Nishikori, who beat Milos Raonic to win the biggest title of his career last Sunday in Tokyo, maintained his fine form by defeating Wu in just one hour and 12 minutes during first-round action at the Shanghai Rolex Masters on Tuesday. The No. 14 seed dropped serve once in the opening set but he lost a mere three points in his last five service games. Nishikori will face a similarly red-hot Sam Querrey on Wednesday.
(12) Milos Raonic d. (Q) Marinko Matosevic 7-6(4), 6-3
Raonic, who also beat Andy Murray and Janko Tipsarevic in Tokyo, kept up his winning ways by dismissing Matosevic in one hour and 28 minutes. Both players were broken once in the first set, but Raonic wrested control of the match by taking the ensuing tiebeaker seven points to four. One break in the second was enough for the 21-year-old Canadian, who finished with 14 aces while serving at 70 percent.
Marcos Baghdatis d. Fabio Fognini 6-2, 6-2
Although Baghdatis will need a lot more than a first-round win over Fognini, the Cypriot is making a late push this season for 2013 Australian Open seeding. Baghdatis, who reached the Tokyo semifinals before losing to Nishikori, won an incredible 27 of 29 first-serve points to destroy Fognini in one hour and 13 minutes on Tuesday. The world No. 46 capitalized on four of 13 break-point chances en route to a showdown with Raonic, to whom he lost in Cincinnati.
