Paire beats Petzschner in Shanghai, to face Tsonga Benoit Paire is through to an all-French meeting with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga after beating Philipp Petzschner on Monday in Shanghai. Kevin Anderson also advanced, taking out Jarkko Nieminen 6-2, 7-6(4).

    Benoit Paire d. (Q) Philipp Petzschner 7-6(2), 6-4

Paire fired six aces and saved five of six break points to defeat Petzschner in one hour and 16 minutes during first-round action at the Shanghai Rolex Masters on Monday. After exchanging breaks in the first set, Paire dominated the ensuing tiebreaker seven points to two. The world No. 52 added one more break in the second and that was enough for a straight-set victory.

Petzschner, who has made a habit of qualifying for main draws only to struggle in first-round matches, wrapped up his effort with four aces and three double faults. Paire, meanwhile, moves on to an all-French second-round showdown with Beijing runner-up Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

    Kevin Anderson d. Jarkko Nieminen 6-2, 7-6(4)

Anderson saved all four of the break points he faced to dismiss Nieminen in one hour and 21 minutes on Monday in Shanghai. Nieminen was hopeless on second serves in the first set and that resulted in a horrible start. The veteran Finn dropped serve twice in the opener and won a mere five points in four return games.

A much more competitive second set saw both players fight off three break points apiece en route to a tiebreaker. That's where Anderson regained control of the match and finished the job. The 6'8'' South African had squandered multiple match points but finally converted to take it seven points to four. Next up for Anderson is familiar foe John Isner.
