There is no rest for the weary, with Tokyo finalists Kei Nishikori and Milos Raonic returning to action this week at the Shanghai Masters. They are in Tomas Berdych's section of the draw along with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
The third quarter of the Shanghai Rolex Masters draw looks a lot like last week.
Consider the players that are packed into the deepest and most wide-open section: Tokyo champion Kei Nishikori, Tokyo runner-up Milos Raonic, Tokyo semifinalist Marcos Baghdatis, Tokyo quarterfinalist Tomas Berdych, Beijing runner-up Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, and Beijing quarterfinalist Sam Querrey.
Nishikori captured the biggest title of his career on Sunday by defeating Raonic in three sets. The Japanese sensation preceded that victory with wins over Berdych and Baghdatis. Raonic saved match points against both Janko Tipsarevic and Andy Murray in the quarters and semis, respectively, before going down to Nishikori.
Tsonga survived Denis Istomin in a third-set tiebreaker to begin in Beijing then cruised from there until being defeated by Djokovic in the final. Querrey ousted Fernando Verdasco and Andreas Seppi (also in this Shanghai quarter) only to flame out at the hands of Feliciano Lopez.
In Shanghai, Berdych awaits either Seppi or Michael Berrer while Tsonga could face a tough opener in the form of Benoit Paire or Philipp Petzschner. Potential second-round showdowns include Nishikori vs. Querrey and Raonic vs. Baghdatis.
If the seeds hold to form (a difficult proposition due to fatigue from last week), Tsonga will face Raonic in the third round and Berdych will get another shot at Nishikori.
