German Tommy Haas outlasted Nicolas Almagro for a come-from-behind three-set win to advance to the second round of the Shanghai Masters event.
Nicolas Almagro had this match in hand in the first set. The Spaniard, who was the No. 9 seed, smacked nine aces in the opening frame alone and did not face a single break point as he surged to an early lead.
Haas hung tough in the second set, however. The German was outplayed for much of the set, with Almagro earning himself five break-point chances but being unable to convert on one. Haas chose the exact right moment to pull ahead of Almagro, getting the crucial mini-break in the tiebreaker at 1-0 and yanking the momentum out from underneath the Spaniard.
Almagro went away completely in the third set. Haas jumped out to a 4-1 lead and rolled to a 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-2 victory.
