Richard Gasquet makes quick work of Brian Baker on Monday in Shanghai. Gasquet awaits either Lleyton Hewitt or Radek Stepanek in the second round.
Richard Gasquet kept up his fine hard-court form by rolling over Brian Baker 6-2, 6-3 in the first round of the Shanghai Rolex Masters on Monday evening. Gasquet, who won the Bangkok title two weeks ago, broke serve four times to advance in one hour and 10 minutes.
Baker did well to qualify for the main draw, a feat he has accomplished many times over the past few months. But this level has been a different story for the 27-year-old American, and it was again versus Gasquet. Baker won a mere five of 20 points when required to toss in a second serve and he saved only one of five break points.
Gasquet dominated this one right from the start. Shanghai's No. 11 seed converted all three of his break chances in the first set and won all 10 of his second-serve return points. His third break of the day finished it off in style at 5-2.
After dropping serve once in the opener, Gasquet did not come close to losing it in set two. As such, one break was easily enough for 14th-ranked Frenchman to finish off the straight-set victory on serve at 5-3.
Next up for Gasquet is the winner of a veteran matchup between Radek Stepanek and Lleyton Hewitt.
