Alexandr Dolgopolov has a surprisingly easy time with Jeremy Chardy on Monday in Shanghai. Next up for Dolgopolov is either Gilles Simon or Jurgen Melzer.
Alexandr Dolgopolov kicked off his Shanghai Rolex Masters campaign in style on Monday, crushing Jeremy Chardy 6-3, 6-2. Dolgopolov struck four aces without double-faulting and never faced a break point as he cruised in one hour and seven minutes.
Chardy had a considerable edge in current form and a 2-0 lead in the head-to-head series, but he never had a prayer in this one. The 31st-ranked Frenchman won a mere 42 percent of his second-serve points and did not make any kind of headway in the return game even though his opponent served at a horrendous 48 percent.
Dolgopolov, on the other hand, was lethal with his return. The 20th-ranked Ukrainian earned five break points in each set, capitalizing on one in the first and two in the second. He enjoyed a comfortable lead the entire time and finished off the proceedings with a final routine hold at 5-2.
Chardy also recorded four aces, but he double-faulted four times. Dolgopolov, meanwhile, awaits either Gilles Simon or Jurgen Melzer on Wednesday.
