Andy Murray is bidding for thee straight titles in Shanghai this week. The No. 3 seed headlines a section of the draw along with John Isner, Richard Gasquet, and Gilles Simon.
Andy Murray will be looking to rebound from a Tokyo semifinal loss to Milos Raonic when he takes the court this week at the Shanghai Rolex Masters. It's the perfect place for Murray to get back on track, as he is the two-time defending champion and owner of a perfect 9-0 record.
The third-ranked Scot finds himself in a deep and relatively dangerous second quarter of the draw, but one that he should be able to navigate. Fellow seeds include 6'9'' American John Isner, Bangkok champion Richard Gasquet, and Bangkok runner-up Gilles Simon. If the seeds hold to form, Murray would meet Simon in the quarters while Isner would go up against Gasquet.
However, the chances of that are slim due to a strong contingent of unseeded threats. Murray awaits either Bernard Tomic or Beijing semifinalist Florian Mayer; Isner will contest his opener against either Kevin Anderson or Jarkko Nieminen. Alexandr Dolgopolov, Jurgen Melzer, Radek Stepanek, and wild card Lleyton Hewitt are also capable of doing damage in this section.
In addition to Tomic-Mayer and Anderson-Nieminen, first-round matches to watch include Simon vs. Melzer, Stepanek vs. Hewitt, and Gasquet vs. qualifier Brian Baker.
