• Federer seeking first title in Shanghai

    10/7/12 7:40 PM | Kelli DeMario
Federer seeking first title in Shanghai World No. 1 Roger Federer makes his return to competition for the second week of October, as the ATP World Tour heads to Shanghai, China for the Masters 1000 event. The 31-year-old looks to secure a record-breaking 22nd Masters title this week.

World No. 1 Roger Federer is back on court following a successful effort for Switzerland against the Netherlands in Davis Cup. The veteran enters the Masters 1000 Shanghai with a 61-8 record for the season, which includes title-winning runs in Rotterdam, Dubai, Indian Wells, Madrid, Wimbledon and Cincinnati.

"I hope I will finish World No. 1 at the end of the year," said Federer. "For me it's about trying to play well here in Shanghai and go from there. If everything would have been totally focused on world No. 1, I would have gone to Tokyo or Beijing, most likely, and all those things.

"I've already reached my goal by getting back to world No. 1 in the summer. That was for me the goal, getting back there and winning a Grand Slam, particularly Wimbledon. I feel very much at peace and I'm happy. I always have to look 12 months ahead, as well, making sure I stay injury free, that I stay hungry for more. This is where if it works out, great, and if it doesn't, someone else plays better. I am here, so I'll give it the best shot I can and we'll see how it goes."

The top seed leads a competitive quarter of the draw that includes (7) Juan Monaco, (10) Stanislas Wawrinka and (13) Marin Cilic. Other players in the section are Denis Istomin, Carlos Berlocq, Albert Ramos and former world No. 7 Fernando Verdasco.

The closest seed to the Swiss is Wawrinka, who looms as a possible round of 16 opponent. Further progress through the tournament may set a quarterfinal clash with either Monaco or Cilic. Should he reach the last four, Federer will likely face reigning US Open champion Andy Murray for a place in the final.

Federer is scheduled to open his bid against Ze Zhang or qualifier Yen-Hsun Lu.
