    Tokyo - Berdych reaches qf, Monaco falls to Baghdatis World No. 6 Tomas Berdych is through to the final eight at the Japan Open following his straight-set win over Alejandro Falla. The second seed is joined in the quarterfinal by Marcos Baghdatis, who ousted fourth seed Juan Monaco.

    Second seed Tomas Berdych advanced to the last eight in Tokyo, having upended Colombia's Alejandro Falla in straight sets. The world No. 6 tallied nine aces and a pair of service breaks en route to a 6-3, 7-5 victory. Berdych ended the 79-minute match without facing a break point on serve.

    "I was feeling much better physically than in my first match," said Berdych. "I was able to profit from that. I was serving well, was playing solid and when I had the chance, I took it. That’s why I was able to finish it in two sets."

    He will face 8th seed Kei Nishikori for a place in the semifinals. Nishikori rallied to defeat former world No. 5 Tommy Robredo in the second round.

    Marcos Baghdatis def. (4) Juan Monaco 7-5, 1-6, 6-3

    Former world No. 8 Marcos Baghdatis is through to the quarterfinals after ousting 4th seed Juan Monaco in three sets. The Cypriot collected two breaks of serve through to a 7-5, 1-6, 6-3 in two hours and 17 minutes.

    "I’m very happy I’m here. Every time I come here, I love it," said Baghdatis. "The people are great, the tournament is great, and the atmosphere in centre is very good. I just want to go out there to find a way to win and fight in every match."

    Baghdatis is scheduled to meet Russia's Dmitry Tursunov in the next round.
