Tsonga advances, Ferrer withdraws in Beijing

David Ferrer was unable to continue his match against Yen-Hsun Lu, sending the Taiwanese man into the second round.

The world No. 5 will not only miss the rest of the tournament in Beijing, but his team has reported that he will also miss the Shanghai Masters next week due to illness and fatigue.

Ferrer didn't not report a specific injury as the reason for his withdrawal, instead stating that he was not feeling well.

The upset win sends Lu into the second round, where he will face Feliciano Lopez, another Spaniard.

This was not the easiest start to the tournament for No. 3 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. The Frenchman lost the first set to Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin, who played better tennis for most of the first set and some of the third as well.

Tsonga, who hasn't found his range in Beijing yet, leaked a number of unforced errors--especially in the third set. But the No. 3 seed was at his best in the tiebreaker, during which he was solid off the ground.

With Ferrer out of the tournament, Tsonga heads into the second round as the top seed in the bottom half of the draw. He'll play another tricky opponent in Nikolay Davydenko in the second round.

It's too bad that Ferrer had to withdraw. I hope he takes care of himself and gets back to the game soon.

I was surprised to see that Istomin won that first set against Tsonga.

This withdrawal would not have been bad, if he could have rested up for shanghai, but that's not the case, coz he's slated to miss Shanghai also. That's a bummer.

OK, Ricky, when you're right, you're right. It's a retirement at Beijing and a subsequent withdrawal from Shanghai.
