(2) Tomas Berdych def. Benoit Paire 6-1, 7-6(6)
Second seed Tomas Berdych is through to the second round after upending France's Benoit Paire on Monday. The 27-year-old converted three of 6 break points through an hour and 45 minutes of play.
"I’m going match-by-match. So far I’ve had a pretty good season," Berdych told RakutenOpen.com. "I’m not counting it in general. I had some great results that I can count towards that and I hope if I continue with my game, it will qualify me for London.
"I have nice memories here. I like coming back to Tokyo. It was one of the biggest tournaments I won in the past. It gives me positive thinking. As with any other week, I want to do well and try and play my tennis."
Berdych completed the opening-round effort with 38 of 46 first-service points won. He will take on either Alejandro Falla or Thomaz Bellucci in the next round.

Wawrinka is slated to meet either France's Jeremy Chardy or wildcard Yuichi Sugita in round two.
